October 2008. Redditch War Memorial Refurbishment.
Architects: Ashmead Price.
Contractors: Doherty & Lee.
RocBloc Ltd natural stone paving and setts were specified by Redditch Borough Council as part of the refurbishment of the town centre . Yorkstone tumbled wharfedale flags form the pedestrian area. Natural stone steps (also tumbled) border the cenotaph which is surrounded by RocBloc Wharfedale tumbled stone setts. The steps were made in a stone of contrasting colour to highlight the monument and the whole layout is sympathetic to the stonework of the adjacent St. Stephen’s Church.
The finished effect highlights the benefit of blending natural stones from a number of UK quarries. This produces the pleasing colour variations within the paved area. As the stone ages these colours will mellow further to reflect the surrounding stonework. This picture was taken just one week after the contractors finished work.
